MEET THE FUTURE: Pre-College Workshop Series

Meet the Future is a new, weekly workshop series hosted by Marwen’s College and Career Team on preparing for the college application process and beyond. Each workshop meets for one hour from 3-4 pm every Tuesday from July 7 to August 18. All workshops are free and open to young people preparing to apply for college and to those interested in learning more about college and beyond.
Part I: Foundations (July 7 - July 21)
The first part of the series will address the nuts and bolts of applying to college, including a conversation with staff from Columbia College Chicago and Arrupe College of Loyola University Chicago.
Part II: Get to Know Your Future (July 28 - August 18)
The second part of the series will center conversations with people on pathways to college and beyond, including conversations with admissions staff at SAIC and UIC to Marwen alumni currently attending college. The final workshop features a Time Capsule art-making workshop with teaching artist Katie Chung.
What to know before you register:
There are 7 unique workshops. You can register for as many as you like!
Workshops start the week of July 6 and end the week of August 18.
All workshops meet on Tuesdays.
All workshops and registration take place on Zoom.
You can register up until the time the workshop starts. We encourage you to sign up sooner rather than later to get a sense of audience size.

PART I: FOUNDATIONS
What Is the College Application Process? | Columbia College Chicago

In this workshop, we’ll speak with Victor Arroyo, Admissions Officer at Columbia College Chicago. Learn about the general college application process: when to get started on applications, scholarships, portfolio requirements, and more.
FAFSA: Financial Aid Essentials | Arrupe College of Loyola University Chicago
Webinar with Viviana Arellano, Associate Director
Tuesday, July 14, 3-4 pm
FAFSA is the application that many colleges use to determine your eligibility for financial aid. Join Viviana Arellano from Arrupe College to go through the FAFSA application process.
How to Approach College Application Essays
Tuesday, July 21, 3-4 pm
In this workshop, we’ll examine two types of essays in college applications. The first is the Common Application Essay, the main essay students write to speak on unique personal experiences. The second is the Artist Statement, where art school applicants write about their practice and portfolio. This workshop will be recorded and published on Marwen’s blog.

In this workshop, we’ll chat with Maribel Ang, a recent member of the admissions team and graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Maribel will discuss how to prepare your portfolio for college applications from home. This workshop will be recorded and published on Marwen’s blog.
Intro to UIC and its Arts Programs | University of Illinois at Chicago
Evelyn Gaynor, College Recruiter
Tuesday, August 4, 3-4 pm
We’ll speak with Evelyn Gaynor, College Recruiter at the UIC School of Architecture, Design, and the Arts. Evelyn will review the UIC admissions process and offer resources for virtual tours. This workshop will be recorded and published on Marwen’s blog.
What Was Your Path to College? | Marwen Alumni Panel

We will hold a conversation with Marwen alumni who are now college students. We’ll discuss the transition from high school to college, the effort to keep making art in college, and the overall college life. This workshop will be recorded and published on Marwen’s blog.
Vessels for the Future | Time Capsule Workshop
