ARTIST TALK SERIES

Below you'll meet artists making a sustainable living through their experiences as multi-talented creatives.

We invite you to learn about their unique art making processes, what it means to be a freelancer right now, more traditional job experiences, and more!

This series includes 3 Instagram lives and a Career Panel discussion, featuring 5 local artists.

What you will learn from our Artist Talk Series:

  • How you can approach art as a career.

  • How you can commit to yourself as an artist despite challenges.

  • Get inspired through different artists' current projects.

  • How to define your own success.

  • Develop ideas in connecting your art practice to your community through real examples from local artists.

You don't want to miss these conversations, we've added them below ↓

Featuring Guests: Jarius Brookins, Jen Delos Reyes, Joelle Mercedes, Chelsea Stevenson

Facilitator: Esperanza Rivera, Young Teaching Artist

Do you have an eye for art and want to build a career as an artist? Wondering what the different paths as an artist are to make money? Get inspired, and watch four professionals working in the arts (including Marwen alumni) for an open conversation about what it means to have an arts career in 2021.

ARTIST IG LIVE #1

Jarius Brookins is a Chicago native, graphic designer, and Marwen alum with experience in marketing. He runs a clothing line and also does freelance work in marketing, logo design, and branding. Jarius will share how he started doing freelance work and his process for designing elements in a logo. He’ll take you through a design activity to create your own logo.

ARTIST IG LIVE #2

Chelsea Stevenson is a full-time, celebrated henna artist and business strategist. She started her business, Cardamom & Clove Henna, in her living room. Ten years later she owns a popular henna boutique in Baltimore. Chelsea will share her journey as a creative entrepreneur, the history of henna art, how to use henna safely, and her process to prepare designs for clients.

ARTIST IG LIVE #3

Joelle Mercedes is an artist and educator whose work is grounded in collage techniques that puncture the restrictions of the two dimensional frame, examining and stretching concepts of origin, ancestry, birth and history. Join Joelle for a studio visit and conversation where we will investigate her practice in artmaking, education, and curation.
