Hi! We're SO EXCITED to announce our Fall 2021 FREE, arts courses! What to know before you register:
Fall term includes 10 unique courses -- 7 are held in-person at Marwen and 3 online through Zoom.

Registration is open for one week (September 22-29) at marwen.org/registration.
Course selections will be confirmed via email the following week.
Each course meets once a week and runs for 8 weeks from October 13 through December 11.

IN-PERSON / Grades 6-8
CHARACTER CREATIONS
Alex Dahm (they/them) and Antwon Funches (he/him)
Wednesdays, Oct 13 - Dec 8 | 5 - 7:30 PM
Memorable characters are the best part of any comic, video game, or anime. Design your own, and experiment with illustration, storytelling, and performance to bring your characters and creatures to life. At the end of the course, you will have created a unique collection of characters ready for your next big project!

THE STRUCTURE OF IMAGES: BREAKING DOWN DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Learn the rules of photography and how to break them! Explore the fundamentals of composition, space, and lighting, then break it all down through collage and abstract photography. Deepen your skills as a photographer, whether you like taking pictures of your friends, your neighborhood, or your breakfast.

FUNDAMENTALS OF PRINTMAKING
River Kerstetter (she/they) and Aileen Castro (she/her)
Thursdays, Oct 14 - Dec 9 | 5 - 7:30 PM
Explore the fundamentals of printmaking using everyday materials and experimental techniques. Create projects using fabric, plants, flowers, found objects, stamps, stencils, and even Legos. Learn about the history of printmaking and how it has changed over time and impacted social movements. Gain a new understanding of printmaking, create a portfolio of art to share with friends, and become a printing expert using accessible materials and tools.

FOLDING THE FUTURE: BOOK ART & TIME TRAVEL

The stories in books transport us to distant worlds and alternative timelines, letting us see our daily struggles from a new perspective. Make one-of-a-kind artist books that express your vision of the future through form and content. Learn bookbinding, layout design, collage, paper-cutting, and paper-making, and experiment with different ways to fold and construct your book while geeking out about science fiction! Together, we'll bring our imagined futures to life, one page at a time.

POWERFUL PORTRAITS: PAINTING YOURSELF

Saturdays, Oct 16 - Dec 11 | 2- 4:30 PM
Paint yourself to explore your personal interests and emotions. Learn fundamental acrylic painting techniques like color mixing and using different brushes and explore a variety of painting styles. Develop your ideas through collage, photography, and by looking at some of the top portrait painters in the world. Make pictures of yourself the way you want to be seen, free of the boxes and labels the world puts on you.

MAKE A WORLD WITH A THREAD

Saturdays October 15 - December 10 | 10 AM - 12:30 PM
Stitch by stitch and thread by thread we weave worlds together. Do you ever imagine the world could be different than it is? Learn to play with textile-based art-making techniques and how artists have used them to build community, explore their dreams, tell personal stories, and create shared rituals. Make sculptures out of fabric and foam, sew patchwork quilts, and learn to use natural dyes. All skill levels are welcome and encouraged!

THE METAMORPHOSIS OF CLAY: PLAYFUL APPROACHES TO HANDBUILDING

Saturdays, 2 - 4:30 PM
What would it mean to make clay an extension of your body? Learn basic glazing and wheel-throwing and create ceramic sculptures while enjoying the process of touching, changing, and manipulating clay. Learn new handbuilding techniques and invent your own unique strategies. We will document our sculptures weekly through photography, remembering how the clay reacts to touch and passing time. All skill levels are welcome!

SUSTAINABLE STORYTELLING THROUGH MIXED MEDIA
Abena Motaboli (she/her) and Olivia Comai (she/her)
Wednesdays, Oct 13 - Dec 8 | 5 - 7 PM
We can all help heal our world through the stories we tell and the materials we use to tell them. Make art while respecting the planet and saving money by sourcing your materials from recycling bins, second-hand stores, and the natural world. Create sculptures and drawings, make paper mache, and learn to develop dyes from everyday plants. Let your imagination soar by sharing stories through play, movement, writing, and puppetry and by repurposing natural and found objects.

GUERILLA-MADE ACCESSORIES
Eason Bragg (he/him) and Tikal Rivera (they/them)
Saturdays, Oct 15 - Dec 10 | 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Express yourself in new ways through personal style and design! Make your clothing, book-bag, or other personal item your own through patch, decal, and logo design. Experiment with digital design while learning screen printing, vinyl-cutting, and hand-sewing techniques. Then play with staging and photography as we document your creations to share with friends. We’ll wrap up the course with a virtual design showcase of our creations and fashion.

ONLINE / Grades 6-12
XEROX, BIND, AND SELL: SELF-PUBLISHING
Sarita Garcia (she/her) and Miguel Limon (they/he)
Saturdays, Oct 16 - Dec 11 | 2 - 4 PM
Explore DIY ways of creating self-published books, posters, buttons, and merch to sell in shops. Create handmade books, risograph posters, and comics using markers, pens, Procreate, and your imagination. Meet Chicago artists and explore artist-run stores on field trips. Xerox, hand-bind, and package your finished products to sell or gift to friends and family.
