REGISTER I Spring 2022 Course Schedule

What to know before you register:
Spring term includes 12 in-person courses, 3 online courses through Zoom, and 4 application-based programs.
Registration is open for one week (Jan 26 - Feb 2) at marwen.org/registration.
Young people will need to provide proof of vaccination (at least one dose by January 26) during the online registration process for in-person courses.

Course selections will be confirmed via email the following week.
Each course meets once a week and runs for 10 weeks from February 16 through April 30.

BLACK AND POC LENSES: DARKROOM AND DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Practice fundamental photography skills and be inspired by Black and POC photographers. Learn the basics of lighting, composition, and darkroom and digital photo processes. Develop your unique eye through landscape and portraiture projects, each inspired by a different, amazing contemporary Black or POC photographer.

CERAMICS EXPLORATIONS

Grow your ceramics toolkit by trying hand building and wheel throwing techniques. Develop your individual style and vision with a group of supportive peers. Explore a variety of ceramics methods and glazing techniques to create your own one-of-a-kind clay form inspired from your imagination!

FUNDAMENTALS OF PRINTMAKING

Wednesdays, Feb 16 - Apr 27 | 5 - 7:30 PM
Explore the fundamentals of printmaking using everyday materials and experimental techniques. Create projects using fabric, plants, flowers, found objects, stamps, stencils, and even Legos. Learn to screen print on paper and fabric and explore the history of printmaking and how it’s changed over time and impacted social movements. Create a portfolio of art to share with friends, and become a printing expert using accessible materials and tools.

COMICS!

Experience the process of creating your own comics. Be inspired by classic and contemporary comics. Design unique characters, and give them a story to tell while learning how to storyboard and using traditional illustration techniques.

XEROX, BIND, AND SELL: SELF-PUBLISHING

Explore DIY ways of creating self-published books, posters, buttons, and merch to sell in shops. Create handmade books, risograph posters, and comics using drawing, screen printing, and letter-press printing. Xerox, hand-bind, and package your finished products to sell or gift to friends and family. Visit the artist-run Buddy Shop at the Chicago Cultural Center where you’ll sell your work at the end of the course.

MAKE A WORLD WITH A THREAD

Stitch by stitch and thread by thread we weave worlds together. Do you ever imagine the world could be different than it is? Play with textile-based art-making techniques and learn how artists have used them to build community, explore their dreams, tell personal stories, and create shared rituals. Make sculptures out of fabric and foam, experiment with weaving techniques, and use natural dyes. All skill levels are welcome and encouraged!

POWER PICKUP: 3D MODELING

Love the art and design within 3D video games? Learn to be a video game artist and designer. Use your drawing skills to create concept art for a game power pickup item, then learn to use Blender to make a 3D model of the object on a computer the same way professional game artists do!

THE METAMORPHOSIS OF CLAY: PLAYFUL APPROACHES TO HANDBUILDING

What would it mean to make clay an extension of your body? Learn basic glazing and wheel-throwing to create ceramic sculptures while enjoying the process of touching, changing, and manipulating clay. Learn new handbuilding techniques and invent your own unique strategies. We will document our sculptures weekly through photography, remembering how the clay reacts to touch and passing time. All skill levels are welcome!

POWERFUL PORTRAITS: PAINTING YOURSELF

Explore your personal interests and emotions through paint. Learn fundamental acrylic painting techniques like color mixing and how to use different brushes. Develop your ideas through collage, photography, and by looking at some of the top portrait painters. Make pictures of yourself the way you want to be seen, free of the boxes and labels the world puts on you.

WHAT IS A BOOK?: PLAYFUL BOOKBINDING

We’re used to reading stories in books, but the shape of a book can tell a story, too. Play with bookbinding, layout design, collage, paper-cutting, and paper-making to create your own stories. Then experiment with different ways to fold and construct your unique artist book.

RAINBOW PLUSHIES

Design and sew playful 3D stuffed fabric figures. Create animals, monsters, and characters from your own imagination that celebrate many spectrums of looking and being. Use fabric and basic sewing techniques, then embellish your plushies with stitching, buttons, and sequins.

LARGER THAN LIFE: MIXED MEDIA SCULPTURE

Make larger-than-life versions of your favorite everyday objects, like a gummy bear as big as your head or a giant pencil that you have to hug in order to draw with! Learn how to use paper-maché, plaster, and paint to create realistic sculptures that have a life of their own!

SUSTAINABLE MIXED MEDIA

We can help heal our world through the stories we tell and the materials we use to tell them. In this course youth will think about their relationships to the land as well as make art using sustainable material from recycling bins Create sculptures and drawings, make paper mache, and learn to develop dyes from everyday plants. Let your imagination soar by sharing stories through play, movement, writing, and photography and by repurposing natural and found objects.

CHARACTER CREATIONS

Memorable characters are the best part of any comic, video game, or anime. Design your own, and experiment with illustration and storytelling to bring your characters and creatures to life. At the end of the course, you will have created a unique collection of characters ready for your next big project!

Learn the rules of photography and how to break them! Explore the fundamentals of composition, space, and lighting, then break it all down using collage and abstract photography. Deepen your skills as a photographer, whether you like taking pictures of your friends, your neighborhood, or your breakfast.
