Spring Break 2023 FREE Workshops

Spend your break with us! During CPS Spring Break, April 3-7, Marwen will offer FREE artmaking workshops designed and led by Marwen Emerging Teaching Artists, movie screenings, and space for young people grades 6-12 to do homework and spend time with peers. Also, we will celebrate Marwen Spirit Week with daily themes. Spark your creativity, and come to Marwen dressed up!

Marwen’s no-cost programs exist for young artists in Chicago who want to explore visual arts, are in 6th-12th grades during the 2022/23 school year, and do not have access to arts programming due to financial and systemic barriers. Learn more about our values and how we invest in the power of young artists.

Artmaking Workshops

10 am - NOON & 1-3 pm

Marwen will host half-day, two-hour workshops where you can learn a variety of skills, collaborate with Marwen artists, and learn directly from a celebrated Chicago emerging teaching artist. These workshops offer the chance to immerse yourself in a specific artistic practice for the day! Registration for these courses are required. Preview workshops below.

Movies + Popcorn

Movie Screenings, 10 am - NOON & 1-3 pm

Are you looking for a fun activity to do over spring break? Why not join us for a movie! Marwen will host full-day movie screenings of your favorite flicks. Sit back, relax, and enjoy some popcorn. Registration is required. Preview movie listings below.

MONDAY, APRIL 3


Wheat-Paste Murals: Mixed Media Workshop

Elizabeth Cardona | 10 am - NOON

Collaborate with the class to design wheat-paste murals! You will be introduced to new skills in wheat-pasting using magazines and small hand drawings that will be added to a large class mural, while also creating your own small print design.


Rayographs Prints: Photo Workshop

Dylan Merino | 1-3 pm

[REGISTRATION CLOSED]


Learn how to make your own one of a kind prints using fundamental darkroom techniques. Create Rayograph prints using light and found/repurposed materials to make your own unique image.

Creative Comics: Bookbinding Workshop

Kelly Wang | 10 am - NOON

You will be introduced to the medium of zines and self-publishing. Learn simple methods of book making and be introduced to the culture, history, and creative self-expression of zines and comics.


Totally Totes! Printmaking Workshop

Naomi Flores & Emma Casillas | 1-3 pm

Learn block printing skills to print on tote bags, patches, and paper. Carve your favorite design and make multiple prints on fabrics and paper that you can share with your friends and family.

Music Parlor: Digital Workshop

Mario Anaya | 10 am - NOON

Use mixed media materials and Procreate to create a digital artwork inspired by your favorite song. Take a song that has a strong meaning to you and visualize how to make a picture of it.


Piece by Piece: Mosaics Workshop

Matt Ryerse | 1-3 pm

[REGISTRATION CLOSED]


In this mosaic workshop the emphasis is on re-incorporating waste or broken work back into the making cycle. Reimage “failure” or “brokenness” using ceramic shards to create beautiful repurposed mosaic panels or tiles.

Piñata Party: Mixed Media Workshop

Make your own traditional Mexican piñatas! In this workshop design and construct a piñata using crepe paper, cardboard, and paint to make your own beautiful creations.


Characters N’ Stories: Drawing Workshop

Natalie Ayala & Erica Scott | 1-3 pm

[REGISTRATION CLOSED]


Create zines about a topic that’s important to you - whether its climate change or your favorite anime character! In this workshop use storytelling, text, and drawings to create a series of zines. By the end of the workshop, you'll have your own zine collection that you can share with everyone in the class.

Chicago Blocks: Printmaking Workshop

Represent your neighborhood in Chicago in this printmaking workshop! In this workshop you will create collaborative collages and learn block printing techniques to rep your hood.


Animation Basics: Design Workshop

Joseph Jones | 1-3 pm

In this workshop learn the basics of animation principles to create a short animated loop of your choosing. At the end we will put everyone's clips together to create a collaborative animation.
