DIY Textile Workshop - with Marwen's Family Advisory Board

Updated: Sep 9, 2020

On August 21, 2020, our Family Advisory Board (FAB) joined together for a socially distant DIY Textile workshop. During this workshop, they were able to create their own scarves filled with one of a kind designs using natural dye techniques, also known as Shibori.

At Marwen, we have our Family Advisory Board, first established in 2015, to support and implement programs for other Marwen families and students. In the past, FAB has co-hosted Family Art Day with the Student Advisory Board, planned gallery walks, museum visits for a family day in Chicago, helped with exhibition openings, and so much more.

After months of being separated, FAB, who are primarily Marwen parents, realized they wanted to find ways around being creative at home. As a result, they put together this mini DIY Textile workshop (shibori) to learn how they can be creative with limited resources at home. If you’re wondering what shibori is, it’s the Japanese word for a variety of ways of embellishing textiles by shaping cloth and securing it before dying.

This workshop was led by Rachelle (Marwen staff), Anwuli (FAB Member & Marwen Parent) and her child Afam (Marwen student). During the day of the workshop, we shared it on Instagram.

If you would like to do this at home, linked below are a few resources to get you started!

If you weren’t able to make it, then take a look below! In it, you’ll be able to meet FAB, see the materials we used, how we created these pieces, and the final looks from our Marwen families.
